Soap Box Sessions | In the Expo

Mini presentations held at the exhibitor’s booth, conducted by a CDRS or DRP and offered for contact hours to ADED registered attendees. The Soap Box Session provides a structured opportunity for individuals to present client application of specific products for use in driver rehabilitation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify products, ideas, challenges, or opportunities shared by peers that may be useful in professional practice and client care.
  • Engage in constructive dialogue by listening critically, asking thoughtful questions, and reflecting on the perspectives presented during the session.

Lightning Learning Session | ADED Government Relations Committee
Learning Level: Introductory | Contact Hours: 0.5 contact hour

This lightning learning session will provide a focused overview of ADED’s recently updated Recommended Practices for Driver Rehabilitation & Vehicle Modifications; Guidelines for Vocational Rehabilitation guiding document and its role in advancing professional practice in driver rehabilitation. Participants will gain clarity on the document’s purpose, intended audience, and core principles, as well as how it supports Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies by promoting safety, quality, consistency, and fiscal responsibility in the provision of driver rehabilitation and vehicle modification services to individuals with disabilities.

  • Explain how the document supports Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies.

Seminar 5 | When "Easy" Isn't

This course provides driver rehabilitation specialists with a comprehensive framework for evaluating and training drivers with disabilities. Through detailed case studies, participants will examine clients utilizing a range of adaptive driving equipment and explore the clinical reasoning behind assessment and equipment selection. The course addresses the unique challenges encountered during evaluations, including physical, cognitive, and perceptual considerations, and presents strategies to optimize client outcomes. Participants will also analyze barriers within the assessment and training process, review attempts at alternative adaptive solutions, and assess final outcomes. By the end of the course, specialists will enhance their ability to develop individualized, client-centered interventions that promote safe, independent, and sustainable driving

  • Identify and analyze challenges that arise during equipment fitting and preliminary evaluation of clients with disabilities.
  • Apply advanced clinical reasoning to assess complex driver profiles and determine appropriate adaptive solutions. Collaborate with peers to develop, evaluate, and compare alternative strategies for addressing client-specific barriers and achieving successful outcomes.

Seminar 6 | Bridging Innovation: Vehicle Technology & Driver Rehabilitation

As vehicle technology continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, driver rehabilitation specialists must remain informed, adaptable, and forward-thinking. This session continues our conversation on technology, offering participants education on current levels of autonomy, updates on key advancements in vehicle automation, safety systems, and accessibility features, and exploration of future needs/concerns. We will review essential highlights and introduce new developments, including updates in regulations, ethical considerations, and the practical implications for clinical practice. Through guided discussion, case study exploration, and structured audience polling, participants will have the opportunity to share experiences, identify gaps in knowledge, and voice priorities for future training. The insights gathered will inform the design of the future educational offerings, ensuring it reflects the most relevant, practice-driven needs of the driver rehabilitation community. By engaging in this session, participants will remain at the forefront of vehicle technology, strengthening their readiness to integrate advancing vehicle technologies into practice.

Seminar 7 | Foundational Low Vision Strategies for Bioptic Driving Preparation

This session provides occupational therapists, driver rehabilitation specialists, and allied health professionals with foundational strategies to prepare individuals with low vision for bioptic driving training. While advanced bioptic training is conducted by certified driver rehabilitation specialists, low vision rehabilitation lays the groundwork by addressing critical visual and cognitive skills. Participants will explore evidence-based interventions such as eccentric viewing training for central scotomas, scanning strategies to optimize field use, contrast sensitivity and glare assessment, and functional training for everyday activities with bioptic devices. Emphasis will be placed on integrating these techniques with sensory and cognitive considerations to enhance patient readiness for advanced driver rehabilitation. The session combines didactic instruction with experiential workshops, enabling participants to practice eccentric viewing and scanning activities. By strengthening these core skills, clinicians will be better equipped to support patients’ transition to specialized bioptic driver training.
