Highlights include risk factors, the emerging role of positive psychology, including mindfulness, and sense of purpose, in supporting safe driving.

Seminar 1 | Executive Function Assessment in the Comprehensive Driver Assessment

Executive functioning skills combine many high-level cognitive skills that impact the strategic level of driving execution. Planning, organizing, sequencing, problem solving, judgement, insight, error recognition and emotional regulation directly impact performance on the road. Assessing this area in the clinic can be elusive and feel deductive in nature. Are we maximizing the opportunities in the clinic? Are we providing relevant in car tasks to assess these skills? This short course will aim to explore evidenced based assessments that can be utilized to determine executive functioning skills developed or retained in clients of varied diagnostic groups. There will be opportunity to explore the power of clinical observations of behavior and approach to tasks particularly, in respect to strategic skill assessment. Discussion and exploration of in car skills to imbed in the on-road assessment to capture executive functioning skills and strategic driving skills. Case studies will be shared.

Seminar 2 | New Evidence-based Resources for Autistics Pursuing Driving & Communication Mobility

Our research has found that autistic adolescents obtain driver’s licenses at lower rates compared to their neurotypical counterparts, however both populations have similar crash rates. In this session, researchers from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and an OTD/CDRS will provide an overview of the research on driving and community mobility with autistic youth. The review of research will highlight recent and ongoing studies 1) using validated measures to screen autistic adolescents who may be ready to pursue driving from those that are not ready, 2) developing an innovative, AI-powered interactive web platform “Empowering Transport among Autistic Adolescents” that delivers comprehensive, accessible, evidence-based support for families and professionals guiding autistic adolescents toward safe, independent mobility, and 3) refining an on-line readiness-to-drive checklist that provides feedback for skill development. The presenters will illustrate the studies’ findings using case-based examples so participants can reflect on the applicability to their practice.

Teaching someone how to drive is among the most challenging tasks in the current market. Whether conducted in a hospital or a driving school, driver education and rehabilitation are often regarded as demanding due to the limited resources available for working with drivers. This presentation explores the role of driving simulators as an adjunct to traditional behind-the-wheel training. Attendees will gain insight into how simulators can benefit a diverse range of clients, including those with orthopedic or neurological conditions, as well as novice and experienced drivers. Participants will examine how simulators can enhance clients’ cognitive skills within dynamic environments. Additionally, the presentation will discuss how simulators can be employed to train clients who require various types of adaptive equipment. Finally, attendees will evaluate the advantages and limitations of different driving simulators currently available on the market.
