This immersive two-day training is designed specifically for driver rehabilitation evaluators seeking hands-on experience with adaptive driving equipment and techniques for assessment and training. Learn how to navigate real-world challenges during behind-the-wheel instruction.
  • Emphasis is placed on practical skill development with direct, behind-the-wheel training using various adaptive controls.
  • Ideal for new evaluators and professionals looking to deepen their skillset in adaptive driving instruction.

Day 1 focuses on foundational concepts, including route selection, evaluator vehicle control, and the use of hand controls, steering devices, and left foot accelerators. Participants engage in hands-on driving exercises to practice these skills.

  • Learn how to select therapeutic evaluation and training routes that align with client goals and build essential skills.
  • Understand evaluator vehicle control, including when and how to safely take over the vehicle during an evaluation.
  • Gain hands-on experience with:
    • Hand controls – Understand differences between hybrid and mechanical systems, and how to choose the most appropriate based on client needs.
    • Steering devices – Explore purpose, function, and therapeutic application.
    • Left foot accelerators (LFA) – Learn techniques for instruction and repetition-based learning for client success.

Day 2 builds on this knowledge with case study discussions, adaptive equipment installation, and advanced driving techniques. Emphasis is placed on identifying and correcting driving errors, writing vehicle modification prescriptions, and conducting vehicle fittings. The course concludes with a review of secondary equipment options, wheelchair management techniques, and a final Q&A session to ensure ongoing support and professional development.

  • Apply your foundational knowledge through interactive case studies and problem-solving exercises.
  • Learn to prescribe adaptive equipment and vehicle modifications with clinical reasoning and client-centered approaches.
  • Engage in hands-on activities including:
    • Installation of adaptive driving equipment.
    • Vehicle fitting for optimal safety and function.
    • Evaluation of secondary control systems (e.g., turn signals, gear shifters).
