The Older Driver Badge: Awareness of the challenges of a rapidly growing diverse aging population and the specific aspects across the spectrum of aging drivers is critical for the driver rehabilitation specialist servicing this population. The service provider must be aware of the key issues related to the normal aging process as well as those common medical issues associated with this population. The driver rehabilitation specialist must be able to assess for the strengths or challenges for the skills used to drive, adapt the driving method, prescribe and or issue equipment when there are functional limitations and facilitate driving retirement as needed for the older, seasoned driver. The Specialized Instructor Badge: The Specialized Instructor Badge was developed to respond to the needs of driving instructors to have a pathway of education geared specifically towards their specialty area. The goal of this badge is to equip its earners with the knowledge necessary to provide driver training to special populations. These populations may include but are not limited to: new or seasoned drivers with physical disabilities requiring adaptive equipment to drive, drivers with cognitive or perceptual difficulties, drivers with autism spectrum disorder, older drivers, drivers with anxiety disorder, and drivers with low vision. The Vision Badge Level 1 is designed for the driving instructor and health care professional needing to review basic vision concepts or other individuals wanting to learn about basic concepts of vision. The education will cover a basic overview of anatomy of the eye, vision skills and common vision and visual perceptual impairments that can impact driving fitness or fitness to drive and discussion on how these conditions can impact driving and community mobility. The Level 2 Badge (Intermediate) provides an overview of a comprehensive vision evaluation, geared toward an understanding of medical conditions, visual function, and visual processing. This evaluation must also include assessment of cognitive abilities including insight into impairment(s) and learning potential to compensate for limitations in functional vision. This level requires competence in medical disease/injuries and comprehensive understanding of clinical vision evaluation/assessment tools. Click here for the matrix. 

Prerequisites: The Vision Badge Level 2 is designed for participants to have completed Vision Badge Level 1 AND possess current state registration as an allied health professional OR as an active CDRS or DRP. (Verifications required via upload of current state registration/license or proof of CDRS or DRP).

The Autism Badge: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) require unique approaches for driving evaluation, training, and education. Driver rehabilitation specialists servicing this population need to understand the latest research on autism education methods, types of driving-related difficulties commonly experienced due to sensory integration profiles, real-world driving outcomes for those who become licensed, and the availability of clinical assessment tools. Service providers need to be able to evaluate whether a client with autism is ready to pursue driving, understand the challenges and opportunities for autistic drivers and employ the best approach for driver education that supports the learning preferences of the client with ASD. The Wheelchair Seating Badge highlights the intersection of information in assistive technology and driver rehabilitation. The goal of this badge is to equip earners with the knowledge necessary to understand the impact between wheelchair and vehicle. Attention will be placed on the wheelchair passenger and/or their caregivers to assure the best practice for wheelchair securement and seat belt application. Click here for the matrix.

The Inclusive Communication Badge provides training for those in and adjacent to the driver rehabilitation profession to be able to communicate driver rehabilitation services for individuals who are not able to use articulate speech as their primary mode of communication or have difficulty hearing or processing verbal communication, either due to cognitive/language deficits, or a physical impairment/disability.  This badge equips earners with the knowledge necessary to understand multiple communication disorders and best practices to address communication with the new driver as well as seasoned drivers. The Vehicle Modifications Badge focuses on the skills and expertise needed for assessment and prescription of adaptive driving equipment and complex vehicle modifications. Badge earners will demonstrate their knowledge of assessment-driven decision making for applied vehicle modifications and best practices for optimizing safe, functional driving outcomes.
