Agenda:
1. Introductions 10:00-10:15 AM MT
2. Program (10:15-1:15), Neurodiversity in Driving
Abstract: Neurodiversity (ND) is more common than most people think. It encompasses many diagnoses, not just Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is a misconception. People with neurodiverse systems and minds function differently than those who are neurotypical (NT). This presentation will discuss those differences, strategies that have been found to be successful in assessing and training ND individuals in driving, and ways to set up the ND population for safety within the driving environment.
Learning Objectives:
- Identification of what encompasses ND
- Recognize things to consider when completing a clinical and in-car assessment or training session, that makes working with someone who is ND different than a NT individual.
- Have a “toolbox” or strategies, tools and ideas of what may be effective when working with the ND driver vs. NT individuals. Be sure to understand the importance of a ND letter with license and registration for some populations, similar to an aphasia card.
- Be able to share anecdotal information about training programs with relation to ND vs. NT.
Speaker Bio:
Denise Kaplan, owner of Adaptive Driving Solutions, LLC, in Littleton, CO is an Occupational Therapist (OTR/L), licensed in the state of Colorado and registered with the American Occupational Therapy Association. In 2006 she became a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) via the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED), and has been an active therapist in driver rehabilitation and in the CO ADED chapter ever since. She has held both the positions of Secretary and President of the CO ADED Chapter for many, many years. She is the current CO Chapter Secretary. Denise’s adaptive driving career has included working with many individuals, including working with new drivers, drivers with low vision, individuals with developmental and learning disabilities, the older driver, and those with the need for adaptive equipment use. She began her career working with individuals who sustained life altering brain injuries, and quickly found adaptive driving to be the skill that allowed many of those individuals to regain their independence. She has worked in settings of driver education, and hospital-based and community-based practices providing driver evaluations to the general population in the greater Denver metro area for nearly 20 years now.
