The Unexpected Outcome

Abstract:

The driver rehabilitation specialist or CDRS who is front seating a driver training session or on road evaluation may encounter unexpected client behaviors, medical changes, or skill related challenges that impact safety. Recognizing subtle cues, communicating effectively, and maintaining calm, professional decision making are essential to supporting positive outcomes for all involved. This session uses real case studies to help clinicians strengthen observation skills, identify red flags, and better understand how complex scenarios can unfold in the vehicle environment. Participants will learn from one another through shared experiences and collaborative discussion.

Learning Objectives:

• Strengthen observation skills to identify shifts in client performance or behavior.
• Enhance clinician communication strategies during unexpected or challenging situations.
• Maintain a calm, professional demeanor during rapidly changing circumstances.
• Identify red flags through peer shared case examples and real life client scenarios.
• Understand how factors such as vehicle type, client equipment, evaluator positioning, and vehicle setup may influence the progression and management of unexpected events.

Case Studies - Each Member in attendance will provide at least one case study for group review. Each case should include:

- Client age
- Diagnosis
- Equipment used
- Vehicle used
- Situation leading up to the unexpected event
- Steps taken in response
Some cases may include challenging or negative outcomes, which are valuable for learning and discussion. Chapter Officers will prepare at least two cases each to ensure adequate examples are available.
