Addressing the Role of Driver Rehabilitation at the State Level. Presenter: Elizabeth “Liz” Soles, OTR/L, CDRS, CAE

The newly revised Novice Teen Driver Education and Training Administrative Standards (NTDETAS) includes more robust language in addressing the education and training needs of novice drivers with disabilities. The NTDETAS serve to guide all novice teen driver education and training programs in the United States. With help from a task force of ADED members, provisions for servicing drivers who require specialized services now have an opportunity to be addressed and enforced at the state level. This session will review the significant changes to this document and outline grassroots methods for ADED members to discuss and share with administrators at the State level.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the role that the NTDETAS has in advising State driver's education programs
  • Identify the areas that driver rehabilitation specialists play a role in educating and training novice drivers with disabilities.
  • Develop a plan to work with State administrators in including driver rehabilitation services in the driver education program and statutes.

Approaching discussions with older drivers. Presenter: Julia McVicker

Difficult discussions with clients are part of our role in assessing and determining fitness to drive. However there are few conversations more complex and emotional than discussing older driver safety and driving cessation. In this course we will review current research and trends related to aging and driving. The focus is on providing those in the driving field with information to use during those difficult discussions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will explore the current landscape of driving as an older adult
  • Attendees will learn updated information from the NHTSA and insurance agencies on aging and driving
  • Following course attendees will be able to employ new techniques for having difficult conversations with older drivers and their families.
  • Attendees will be able to participate in an open discussion to harness our collective knowledge to share their experiences with driving cessation.
