Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Application for Vehicular Anxiety Presenter Dr. Lazar

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective and proven psychological treatment to reduce anxiety and depression. The main tenet of CBT is that thoughts and behaviours impact the way we feel. In CBT, you learn strategies to identify thoughts and beliefs, as well as to modify them. You also learn behavioural strategies to help reduce and eliminate anxiety, depression and worry. Research suggests that our thoughts, emotions and behaviours are interrelated, so that if you change one, you can change the other two. Awareness of CBT theories and practices, will enable you to learn tools to tackle feelings of anxiety. Specific applications to driving anxiety will be discussed and illustrated.

Learning objectives for presentation:
· Understanding the CBT model and conceptualization
· Develop Cognitive Strategies for anxiety
· Develop Behavioural Strategies for anxiety
· Learning to apply these strategies to driving anxiety

Using CBT to address Vehicular Anxiety – Experiences and Barriers Presenters: Toni-Marie Taylor & Wendy Nieuwland

Experiencing driving anxiety after a motor vehicle accident or other trauma that leads to feeling anxious while driving is something that our driver rehab programs are uniquely positioned to help clients with their recovery. As Occupational Therapists and licensed driving instructor who have received specialized training and supervised by the driver rehab OT, we can provide goal based driver rehab services. During this workshop you will learn about the approach, risks, benefits and how helping clients to improve their function will assist with lessening their in car driving anxiety symptoms. Through a didactic lecture on assessment and training techniques followed by a simulated in vehicle demonstration, participants will learn and develop more skill based training to use when working with clients with driving anxiety.

Learning objectives for presentation:
• By observing a simulated in-vehicle driver rehab session, participants will learn ideas for use with clients who are experiencing driving anxiety
• After observation of the simulated in-vehicle driver rehab session, participants will discuss approaches, understand risks, benefits and pitfalls.
• Understand the pitfalls when working with some third-party payers who do not understand the role of the OT and driving instructor in the driver rehab recovery process; learn some ideas of working with this.
