The vision badge is a succession of badges focused on complex factors related to anatomy of the eye, functional vision and the impact of vision and common impairments on driving fitness. The badges are structured to provide an overview with increased complexity and application for the driver instructor/educator and/or health care professional. The succession of badges need to be taken in order and all individuals wishing to take Level 2 must have completed Level 1.
The Level 2 (Intermediate) Badge provides an overview of a comprehensive vision evaluation, geared toward an understanding of medical conditions, visual function, and visual processing. This evaluation must also include assessment of cognitive abilities including insight into impairment(s) and learning potential to compensate for limitations in functional vision. Prerequisites
This badge requires participants to have completed Vision Badge Level 1 AND possess current state registration as an allied health professional. Health related degrees include Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Kinesiotherapy, Speech Language Pathology, Therapeutic Recreational Therapy, Nursing, and Exercise Physiology. (Verification required via upload of current state registration/license).
Upon completion of the Level 2 (Intermediate) Badge, the attendee will consume education on the following competencies and through knowledge checks have an understanding of:
- Client Intake: Advanced knowledge of disease, injury/age related conditions; Vision history; Ophthalmologic tests and interpretation
- Vision Terminology: Understanding of complexity of vision/eye anatomy
- Visual Impairments: Eye diseases/injuries; Management; Pharmacology
- Clinical cognitive/ visual Screening: Visual acuity; Contrast sensitivity; Oculomotor function; saccades, scanning; Depth Perception; Peripheral vision; Visual field assessment. Neck Flexibility. Cognition: Insight; Memory; Carry over/learning
- Visual Perception Assessment and Impact on Driving Safety: Terminology; Assessment tools; Impact on driving safety; Compensatory strategies
- Behind the Wheel Assessment: Identify areas of impairments and potential driving risks; Adaptive equipment for driving controls (adaptive mirrors, technology); Identify need for final fitting appointment (with respect to adaptive driving controls)
- Training/Intervention: Awareness of medical conditions and impact on functional vision.; Creating an intervention plan; Intervention strategies
- Communication and Documentation: Must establish clear recommendations with respect to licensure and the evaluation results; Develop a comprehensive report indicating a client's needs with respect to driving restrictions and/or adaptive equipment (i.e., daylight driving only)
- Driving recommendations, training, and resources/support: Knowledge of state and province vision requirements; Role of vision specialists for pre-driving vision training; Knowledge of alternative community transportation options
The vision badge Level 2 holder will continuously strive to improve quality of services by doing the following:
• Remains current with relevant research and evidence related to vision and driver training needs
• Understands and complies with ADED Code of Ethics
• Understands and complies with ADED Best Practice Guidelines for the Delivery of Driver Rehabilitation Services
