Seminar 6 | Simple Challenges - Difficult Solutions

This course will serve as a comprehensive pathway to evaluating the intricate factors involved in driving for individuals with disabilities. Participants will delve into real-world case studies showcasing a variety of clients who utilize different types of adaptive driving equipment. The course will address the assessment challenges encountered when working with these clients, as well as the training solutions that can be employed to enhance their driving capabilities. Throughout the course, we will explore the barriers faced in the assessment and training processes, investigate attempts at alternative equipment, and ultimately review the final solutions and their outcomes, providing a well-rounded understanding of the subject matter.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will recognize potential challenges which may emerge during the equipment fitting stage and propose solutions to address each issue.
- Participants will develop clinical reasoning abilities necessary to assess the “challenging” driver.
- Participants will compile a comprehensive list of obstacles encountered during the preliminary evaluation stage of each case study.
- Participants will brainstorm alternative strategies for overcoming each obstacle as a collaborative groups.
- Participants will outline a variety of alternative strategies that could have led to comparable outcomes for each identified obstacle.
Seminar 7 | Low Vision Driving: WHAT???!!! You teach blind people to drive!!!!

This session is about Bioptic Driving and the process to get a Driver’s License using a Bioptic Device. It will discuss low vision and various visual conditions. What an appropriate choice of sunshield and other equipment can greatly assist in safe driving. Discussion regarding specific sunshields and filter combinations that help colorblind people with driving. It will highlight Equipment that helps Bioptic Drivers.
- Provide a brief history of Bioptic driving
- Explore societal attitudes regarding low vision
- Discussion of distance functional vision as it relates to driving
- Provide explanations of various visual impairments
- Spotlight sunshields that help with various visual conditions
- Discuss how an appropriate choice of sunshield can greatly assist in safe driving
- Show how specific sunshields and filter combinations help color blind people with driving
- Discuss equipment that is helpful to low vision drivers

Seminar 8 | Research World Café
Emily Haffner, CScD, MOT, OTRL, CDRS
Learning Level: Introductory | Contact Hours: 2 hours
This will be an interactive discussion based event following the World Café format. The goal of the event is to promote conversation about what matters for research to ADED members. Attendees will sit in small groups and will have 20 minutes to discuss and brainstorm ideas for 3-4 questions (1 question presented at a time). They will write their ideas on large sticky notes and place them on a wall around the room. After all questions have been discussed. Everyone will have a chance to walk around the room, review the ideas on the papers and place stickers next to their favorite ideas. All of the ideas will be compiled in a document to share with the ADED research committee and any other ADED interested groups. The goal will be use use the ideas to create action steps and/or suggested research topics that can be distributed or promoted by ADED.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will discuss what is meaningful to them about topics including: ways to access latest evidence, ways to use/integrate latest evidence into practice, and concepts/questions for new research in the field of driving rehabilitation.
Seminar 9 | Removing Barriers During the Clinical Assessment of Deaf/HOH Drivers

This session will address how to meet the unique needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners. We will share information on ways to appropriately evaluate your clients physical and cognitive abilities to drive safely as well as biases that may be associated with this population. This will include utilizing ASL interpreters, assessing abilities and modicfations to the assessments given.

- Understanding the impact of Deafness on the learning process
- Understanding how to obtain accurate information during the interview and testing process
- Appropriately modifying materials and the environment to meet the needs of your client
Seminar 10 | When things go wrong- a case study

Learning Level: Intermediate | Contact Hours: 1 hour
Review of a specific case & what went wrong. The CDRS will discuss how to recognize when things are starting to go wrong (what are some of the warning signs) and how to potentially head off issues. She will also discuss what she learned from this case & how this other therapists may be able to apply these lessons to their profession.

- Recognize potential problems in a mobility prescription & final fit before they become major problems.
Seminar 11 | Phone a friend: Problem solving cases with basic and low tech equipment

Learning Level: Intermediate | Contact Hours: 1 hour
Three case studies will be presented demonstrating problem solving that occurred to find a driving solution. Selected cases involve the use of an adapted van with basic and low tech equipment. Presentation will also highlight collaborative efforts between CDRS and also with other healthcare providers to find a solution for the patient.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will verbalize benefits of including other healthcare providers and/or CDRS to promote best outcomes for a client.
- Attendees will understand how basic and low tech equipment can be combined on a van to meet a client's needs.
