February 7, 2024 | 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM MT | Live-Virtual | 3 ADED Contact Hours | Members $15 / Non-Members $30
Registration Closes 2/5/2025Agenda:
1. Introductions 10:00-10:15 AM MT
2. Program (10:15-1:15), Neurodiversity in Driving
Abstract: Neurodiversity (ND) is more common than most people think. It encompasses many diagnoses, not just Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is a misconception. People with neurodiverse systems and minds function differently than those who are neurotypical (NT). This presentation will discuss those differences, strategies that have been found to be successful in assessing and training ND individuals in driving, and ways to set up the ND population for safety within the driving environment.
Learning Objectives:
- Identification of what encompasses ND
- Recognize things to consider when completing a clinical and in-car assessment or training session, that makes working with someone who is ND different than a NT individual.
- Have a “toolbox” or strategies, tools and ideas of what may be effective when working with the ND driver vs. NT individuals. Be sure to understand the importance of a ND letter with license and registration for some populations, similar to an aphasia card.
- Be able to share anecdotal information about training programs with relation to ND vs. NT.
Speaker Bio:
Denise Kaplan, owner of Adaptive Driving Solutions, LLC, in Littleton, CO is an Occupational Therapist (OTR/L), licensed in the state of Colorado and registered with the American Occupational Therapy Association. In 2006 she became a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) via the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED), and has been an active therapist in driver rehabilitation and in the CO ADED chapter ever since. She has held both the positions of Secretary and President of the CO ADED Chapter for many, many years. She is the current CO Chapter Secretary. Denise’s adaptive driving career has included working with many individuals, including working with new drivers, drivers with low vision, individuals with developmental and learning disabilities, the older driver, and those with the need for adaptive equipment use. She began her career working with individuals who sustained life altering brain injuries, and quickly found adaptive driving to be the skill that allowed many of those individuals to regain their independence. She has worked in settings of driver education, and hospital-based and community-based practices providing driver evaluations to the general population in the greater Denver metro area for nearly 20 years now.

The performance of the DRC has been the subject of previous presentations that are available for viewing on the ADED e-learning platform. This session will demonstrate how to access and use the fillable test recording forms created for the DRC and posted on the ADED eLearning portal for ADED Members. Continuous improvement of the DRC is sought through the use of updated evidence-based testing. Updated standardized tests and resources added over the past months will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will experience the Driving Risk Calculator's purpose, process, and application to the driver rehabilitation assessment process.
- Attendees will learn through demonstration how to access and utilize the Driving Risk Calculator fillable forms available to ADED members on the ADED website.
- Utilization of the DRC as a decision-making tool during clinical testing will be demonstrated through case studies review.

Ann Clark, OTR/L, CDRS, LDI
Ann Forrest Clark has committed the past 40 years of her life to helping people achieve the skills for independent living through occupational therapy. 18 years ago, she added licensed driving instructor to her tool box and has since worked in the clinic and behind the wheel to help individuals achieve the goal of driving or identify when it is time to seek alternative forms of transportation. In an effort to support other professionals in making those difficult clinical decisions she has developed the Driving Risk Calculator which will be shared at the conference in her presentation.
Ann has served on the ADED certification committee and as the committee co-chair. Ann is grateful for the friendship of her fellow committee members and feels she has learned far more from the experience than she has contributed. She encourages all CDRS’s to consider serving if they feel called to the committee.

The Driving Risk Calculator (DRC) is a framework that organizes the results from standardized clinical tests to help determine when an individual should or should not be referred for an On the Road Driving assessment. It was developed for use by OT clinicians across a health care system. The developer worked with the ADED Research Committee to survey ADED members for feedback on the DRC framework as a method for clinical reasoning. This recording will present the Driving Risk Calculator framework, background and purpose. It will demonstrate the tests used in the DRC. It will also discuss how the DRC is used as part of clinical reasoning and the development of client recommendations. The process used to develop the ADED survey, survey results and research path will be examined.
